What about
plastic…. Putting
it bluntly, plastic is bad… period! Plastic
comes from petroleum.
When we buy plastic we are contributing
to everything associated with the oil
industry, including conflicts
with other countries, oil
extraction issues (like ANWR), oil
spills, plus all the toxins and
pollutants linked with refining the oil and turning them into
products, besides the products themselves and what happens to them down
the road. Even when plastic items can be recycled,
toxins are often released in the process of making other products, and
still involve everything associated with virgin plastic. Besides
supporting the petroleum industry for plastic to be made in the first
place, we are hurting the
environment and we are hurting
ourselves. We don’t know how many diseases,
including cancer, tissue and nervous system disorders…. are directly
related to plastics and petroleum products in general… and at what point
do they enter our bodies…. through the air, water supply, or directly…
Plastic chemicals have been
found to actually migrate from the container to the food it is supposedly
protecting! Plastic
is one of our biggest headaches, too, when it comes to liter.
Plastic takes hundreds or
even thousands of years to decay. A small plastic soda ring, for
example, can take 400 years to biodegrade and some, polystyrene foam
(Styrofoam) will never
decompose. 50%
or more of marine litter is in
some form of plastic. It is
estimated that over one million
birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die
every year from entanglement in or ingestion of plastics. Can
you say without a doubt, that that plastic bag, flying in the wind,
heading to the ocean… is definitely not yours??
In
todays society it is nearly impossible to avoid all plastic, but for many
items, we do have a choice. Think before you
buy!
